Highland 2007 Launch and Lifescan Monster Party 12 January 2007

Cur air bhog Gaidhealtachd 2007 agus partaidh mòr sràide Lifescan

Highland 2007 will be officially launched with a Monster Street Party to be held in Inverness on 12 January 2007. Although elusive Nessie is unlikely to appear – that’s her prerogative! - her European counterparts will take part in the Lifescan Monster Street Party around Inverness city centre.

After the Launch by First Minister Jack McConnell, Inverness Gaelic Choir, the Massed Pipes and Drums of the Highlands and Blazin Fiddles will perform in a spectacular setting overlooking the River Ness, followed by a thrilling fireworks display above Inverness Castle. The celebrations continue into the city centre with a dozen street theatre companies providing entertainment of monster proportions, including a daring aerial ballet by French company Transe Expresse.

Note: many streets will be closed to traffic to accommodate crowds safely – please check the Highland 2007 website www.highland2007.com for more information and details of this free event.

12 and 13 January are significant in the Highlands where many people continue to commemorate An t-Seann Bhliadhn’ Ùr, the Old New Year, on these dates. The tradition arose from the time Britain changed to the Gregorian calendar in the 18th century. Although some time ago now, some parts of the Highlands retain the tradition to this day.

On Saturday 13 January the celebrations continue with a programme of events featuring:

9am-11am Monster Family Splash; Inverness Leisure
10am Re-opening of the permanent exhibitions within Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, as well as the opening of .Fonn ’s Duthchas – Land and Legacy exhibition (13 January until 17 March)
11am The Old New Year Shinty Match: Glenurquhart vs Strathglass, Bught Park
1pm Duthchas – The Legacy. Eastgate Shopping Centre hosts a mini-exhibition on contemporary Highland culture, from the national exhibition Fonn ’s Duthchas
8pm Transe Expresse, Falcon Square, Inverness. A second chance to see this spectacular aerial ballet forming part of the Highland 2007 Launch celebrations.
