The Highlands Astronomical Society is a thriving Society, based in Inverness, but with members from throughout the Highlands.
The aim is to promote and extend the awareness of, interest in, and enjoyment of astronomy within a friendly and stimulating environment. This is done through a varied programme of meetings, activities and events, including talks, exhibitions, social activities and observing sessions, some of which are open to the public.
Viewing the night sky from a dark sky site reveals the wonders of what lies above. The Milky Way can be seen in all its glory; bright patches and dark rifts pepper the band arcing across the sky. From the observing site, just a few miles out of Inverness, it is still possible to see the Milky Way. However, sadly, this beautiful vista is gradually being drowned out by light pollution from towns and cities.
There is a small observatory at the observing site which will be upgraded to one which will be more accessable, not just to members, but also the general public, including youth organisations and those with disabilities.
The new telescope will allow better views of galaxies, nebulae and our neighbouring planets. Other equipment will provide teaching aids for members and the public.
It is hoped the new observatory will be opened in 2007.
