Alasdair mac Mhaighstir Alasdair - the poet of the Gaelic Enlightenment

Born and brought up in Ardnamurchan, many people believe Alasdair mac Mhaighstir Alasdair is the finest of the Gaelic poets.

He compiled one of the first Gaelic / English vocabularies, and became the author of the most passionately patriotic Gaelic poetry ever written.

An exhibition focusing on the life and work of the poet, featuring some first editions of his work and Gaelic manuscripts on loan from the National Library of Scotland, can be found at the West Highland Museum in Fort William between 21 September and 21 December.

The West Highland Museum was founded in 1922 and is one of the oldest in the Highlands. The collections span a wide range of subjects from archaeology to modern industry, with a special emphasis on the great Jacobite risings of the 18th century. The Museum is open all year round.

A series of events is planned around this exhibition, including a cruise on Loch Shiel, a day conference in Glenfinnan, concerts and poetry performances.

The special Ceilidh Cruise along Loch Shiel takes place on 6 October with piper Allan MacDonald and Moidart traditions bearers on MV Sileas. Alight at Dalilea, the poet's birthplace, for a traditional strupag in the 18th century farmhouse and look at the oak tree planted by the poet. Weather permitting, there will also be a stop at the historical Green Isle on the way back.

The day-conference on 14 October is chaired by Pr William Gillies of Edinburgh University. It brings together for the first time academics and musicians to explore and celebrate the life of Alaisdair mac Mhaighstir Alaisdair. Set in the historical Glenfinnan House Hotel, the conference will look at Alasdair's poetry, his involvement in the 45' and his place in Gaelic literature.

The conference will end with a concert of his songs by renowned piper Allan MacDonald and well-known Moidart singer Margaret Maclennan.

Details and ticket information for these events is available from www.thebooth.co.uk
