The 'Sea Cromarty Sparkle' Festival, which is now half-way through its
winter programme of events, turns its attention to serious matters on
St. Andrew's Night - Friday 30th November. At a Great Debate in the
Stables Gallery, Cromarty at 7.30pm, the question 'What's left of
Highland Culture, and is it worth bothering about?' will be discussed by
Scottish Nationalist MSP and historian Christopher Harvie MSP along with
Lewis-born writer and land reform campaigner Alastair McIntosh. Event
organiser Sandy Thomson believes it is important, in this Year of
Highland Culture, that we take a 'warts and all' look at our
fast-changing Highland society. What part, for example, do incomers from
the South or from Eastern Europe have to play in cultural life?
To ensure that the Debate is not just another celebration of Highland
life, a mystery speaker has agreed to kick off proceedings by sharing
with the audience the complaints and criticisms he has been collecting
from Cromarty locals via a 'Grumpy Box' in the post office. Sandy
Thomson refuses to divulge the identity of 'The Man in Black' and has
promised him round the clock protection from irate pipers and highland
dancers.
This is an all-ticket event, and a few tickets are still available,
price £5.00, from The Emporium, High Street, Cromarty - telephone
01381-600551.
This event has been generously funded by Highland 2007 and The Cromarty Trust.
