Royal National Mod Fringe
04 October 2007

For a number of years, a Fringe has existed around the Official Mod but a particular effort has been made this year, partly to make this Lochaber Mod distinctive but also to support Highland 2007.

John Hutchison, Mod Vice Convener and Fringe Convener said: “In building Iomall a’ Mhòid, the Committee was keen to move away from a Fringe that simply provided entertainment, creating instead something that would support and be complementary to the Mod, had a focus on the language and the arts, would be fun, and include plenty for partners too.

"From the lectures on the Influence of the Highlander to a Gaelic ‘Ready, Steady, Cook’, from the Great Book of Gaelic exhibition to the step dancing classes we have tried to draw from the breadth of Highland Culture. The programme even includes a Debate on the Future of the Mod itself!

"The Committee has been very ambitious and I hope that you enjoy the results of our efforts. We are certain that Mòd Lochabair will be lively and interesting, with plenty for everyone, Mod-goers and locals alike!”

The Committee has also had solid support from Murdo Morrison, Acting Chief Executive of An Comunn, to ensure that the programme dovetailed as well as possible with the official events.   Murdo said: "While the focus of many of those who attend the Mod remains on enjoying the various competitions, meeting new people and renewing old acquaintances, Iomall a' Mhòid is an important aspect of the event providing a programme of non-competitive events for all to enjoy.

"The Committee has compiled a varied and challenging but exciting programme that will add to the enjoyment of Mod 2007 and we congratulate them on their efforts. The programme will add greatly to the Royal National Mod 2007 as we celebrate Scotland's Year of Highland Culture.”

Iomall a’ Mhòid has been possible through the support of The Highland Council, Highland 2007, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, HIE Lochaber, businesses and the public. Through their help the Fringe will be substantially free. Those attending events will be invited to donate to the Lochaber Cancer and Palliative Care Fund.

The Fringe Programme will be launched on 3 October and copies of the programme will be available from then.  Updates will be necessary as the programme develops and these will be posted on the website:  www.lochabermod2007.co.uk
