450 hardy souls endured grim conditions for the second sell-out Bealach-na-Ba Challenge. Despite gale force winds and driving rain, all but a handful completed the ninety mile route which started and finished in Kinlochewe and went over the biggest road climb in the UK - the mighty Bealach-na-Ba.
Many even declared that they had enjoyed the experience and were making plans for next year. Others showed their stamina at the rousing ceilidh in the Kinlochewe village hall! The local communities also benefited from the event with hotels and guest houses reporting increased business and bookings being made already for the next event!
The event is now a legend in the UK's cyclo-sportive calendar. These events, typically hilly routes of 90 - 120 miles are the fastest growing form of cycle sport today matching running's 'marathon boom' of the early eighties. With fantastic scenery and quiet roads, Scotland is well placed to cater for the demand for ever harder challenges.
The event was supported by Highland 2007, who recognised its importance in promoting the natural wonders of the area. Competitors came from the far corners of Britain and beyond (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Italy and Columbia) and many will return to cycle and holiday with their families.
The challenge derives great support from the communities around the route. Organiser Katy Boocock said: "It is the warm welcome from the local villages, not to mention their home baking, that makes the event special."
The organisers are planning further events in the north next year and are confident that they will prove as popular as this has been.
