Highland Heritage Sails Away With Multi-Million Pound Investment
01 August 2007

As the mid-point of Highland 2007 passes, people across the Highlands are making the most of this special year to explore their heritage. Today the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) announced a grant of £49,200 so that the pupils of Plockton High School can get hands on experience of building a traditional boat.  This brings the total the Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded so far for schemes that celebrate Highland 2007 to an incredible £5.8million (full list of projects overleaf).

From learning traditional survival skills in the woodlands of Moray, recording the memories of native Gaelic speakers, designing sculptures for a heritage trail to preparing a street pageant, people of all ages are keen to discover more about the language, industries, traditions, buildings and wildlife in and around their community as part of Highland 2007

Commenting from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Colin McLean, Manager for Scotland, said:

“We are staggered by the enthusiasm of people in coming up with great ideas for very diverse projects and are delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund can support them. Exploring your heritage is not only great fun and educational but it helps give us a real sense of identity. What better way to get involved in a year celebrating the culture of the Highlands.”

Thanks to HLF, Plockton Small Boat Sailing Club will be working with school groups and the local community to build three boats that are traditional to the area. Although there are a small number of traditional boats still in existence, there is only one traditional boatbuilder left. The project will culminate in an exhibition showing the history of these types of vessels while one of the boats will be retained to teach sailing skills.

Colin McLean continues:
“Although our heritage stems from the past, heritage projects are about the future, using the past to create new tourist attractions, new jobs, new investment, new sources of learning, new experiences, new friendships and a new sense of pride. The legacy of the projects that HLF has funded will extend far beyond the Year of Highland Culture.”

Fiona Hampton, director of Highland 2007, said: “We are delighted with the support Highland 2007 has received from the Heritage Lottery Fund in creating an eclectic programme of projects and events to celebrate Scotland’s year of Highland culture.

“The range of ideas which have come forward from project and event organisers throughout the Highlands and Islands is truly impressive and we’re really pleased that funding is still being allocated mid way through the year to help realise some of these excellent ideas.”
