Bealach Beag Cycle Sportive
07 May 2007

The Bealach Beag cycle sportive, organised by Strathpuffer Ltd and generously sponsored by Highland 2007, will take place on 12 May 2007.

Starting and finishing in Shieldaig, the route is a circumnavigation of the Applecross peninsula and it packs a punch;  43 miles (70k) long with 6,200ft (1900m) of ascent it takes in the Bealach-na-Ba or Bealach nam Bo (Pass of the Cattle), the UK’s biggest road climb at 2053ft (626m) from sea level in just 6mls (10k). It is set in a fabulous unspoilt landscape with outstanding views of the sea and the hills.

Six hundred riders from all corners of Britain have entered, including an encouraging number from the Highlands, with entries filling up well before the closing date. The interest and enthusiasm amongst the cycling fraternity has been fantastic and a great event is assured. The roads around Applecross have already been buzzing with cyclists into serious preparation and accommodation for the weekend is sold out for miles around.

The communities of Shieldaig and Applecross have been extremely positive and supportive of this event. Indeed it could not have gone ahead without their help.

Gerry McPartlin from Applecross and Chris and Cathryn Field from The Tigh an Eilean Hotel in Shieldaig deserve special mention for the work they have put into supporting us, including organizing the home baking at the food stops (a highlight for many riders in last years Bealach-na-Ba Challenge) and a meal of Bealach Bean Burritos for all finishers.

Here’s hoping for a return of the sunshine so people see the west coast at its best but a warm Highland welcome is assured whatever the weather.

Further details about the event can be found at www.bealach-na-ba.co.uk - or contact Katy Boocock or Peter Ferguson on 01463 221536
